Savile Row - A Brief History

The street name, Savile Row, can be traced back several hundred years and comes from Lady Dorothy Savile, the wife of the 3rd Earl of Burlington.

London’s Savile Row is a name that conjures up images of elegance, tradition, old world charm and sophistication. Since the very first bespoke tailor moved into Savile Row back in 1785, the area has been renowned world-wide as ‘the place’ for tailoring.

Visitors come from far and wide to have suits handmade from the finest cloths by the most highly skilled of craftsmen.

Although many of the original bespoke tailors have now moved away, unable to afford the high land tax rates imposed on the district of Mayfair, a much sort-after area of London, several of the ‘old school’ remain.

Bryan ManningBryan Manning of Manning & Manning is one tailor who remains loyal to Savile Row. Still operating premises out of 9-10 Savile Row, Manning & Manning is well regarded as a true bespoke Savile Row tailor.

The cachet of having a couture-made suit by a Savile Row tailor continues to prevail. Taking up to 100 hours or more to create a perfectly fitting suit of outstanding quality and craftsmanship, it’s something many young businessmen and women aspire to.

Savile Row also made it’s mark on the world thanks to The Beatles. Having set up their offices at number three in 1968 and then performing their last live gig on the roof in 1969, much attention was drawn to this sought after address.
